RABELO BOATS FROM PORTUGAL

A film entitled <The Architecture of the Rabelo», a documentary produced in 1992 in collaboration with the acknowleged naval archaeology researcher Octávio Lixa Filgueiras, is now available on DVD-video format with menu options for soundtrack in Portuguese, English and French.

This film represents a detailed survey of the way how the Rabelo boats were built on the banks of the River Douro, in the North of Portugal. These characteristic, widely known boats used to carry the Port Wine barrels stopped sailing over 40 years ago (see synopsis).

The Architecture of the Rabelo is the title of a study undertaken by ArchitectFilgueiras which served as guidelines for the present documentary film. A direct commentary will clarify the details of greatest interest of a kind of boat building which is practically peculiar to the River Douro and which respects exactly the Nordic processes of wooden ship construction, that is the hull is shaped in clinker planking before the ribs are fitted. Moulds are not used, the shapes being derived from basic measurements, the taste of craftsman and the practical experience of many generations.
This documentary provides one of the rare, perhaps last, opportunities to record the sights of a lost tradition: on the last sand beach of the Douro; directed by the last master boat builder of the river with remnants of the artisans who had worked with the masters of their trade.

L' Architecture du Rabelo est le titre d'une étude de l'Architecte Filgueirasqui à servi de guide à ce documentaire. Le commentaire éclaircira le detail le plus interessant d'un genre de construction assez particulier qui respect totalement le procédé nordique de charpenterie navale, consistant en la formation de la coque au planches à clins, avant la fixation des membrures. On n'utilise pas de moulage, les formes sont obtenus à partir de mesures de base, du goût de l'artisan et de la pratique hérité de plusieures générations.
Ce documentaire représente l'une des derniéres et rares opportunités de fixerles images d'une tradition dejá perdue: sur la derniére plage du Douro; par le dernier maître charpentier du fleuve avec quelques artisans qui restent et qui ont travailler avec les maîtres.

A arquitectura do rabelo, é o título de um estudo do Arquitecto Filgueiras que serviu como roteiro para o presente filme documentário, trabalho este para o qual se contou também com a sua orientação técnica.
Um comentário directo esclarece os pormenores de maior interesse, de um género de construção bastante peculiar e que respeita em absoluto o processo nórdico de carpintaria naval, ou seja a formação do casco antes da montagem das cavernas, sendo o forro de tábua trincada.
Não usam moldes, as formas são obtidas a partir de medidas básicas, o gosto do artista e a prática de muitas gerações.
Tal como antes, neste filme não foram utilizadas ferramentas mecânicas ou movidas a outra energia que não fosse de origem humana e num caso especial com a ajuda de juntas de bois.
Este documento correspondeu à última oportunidade de fixar as imagens de uma tradição agora perdida: no último areio do Douro; pelo último mestre Calafate do rio, com os remanescentes de alguns artífices que com os mestres trabalharam.
