Museum Gustavianum and the Department of Archaeology, Upsala University, Sweden, research pre-Viking and Viking boat grave culture

Sweden’s Uppsala university museum, Gustavianum, has initiated a research program together with the Department of Archaeology at the university, to deepen our understanding of pre-Viking and Viking-age boat grave culture.

The Vikings lived in an intensely maritime society in which boats and the sea were crucial to economic and political development. Gustavianum holds one of the finest collections of boat-graves in the world, and the research project will also produce an international traveling exhibition on this subject.
