Hellenic Maritime Museum
 

Mission Statement:

The objectives of the Museum are:
The collection, maintenance, preservation and exhibition of all items of historical significance that were collected from the nation's naval battles as well as from other naval activity of the Greeks from ancient times until today.

The study of our naval history as well as the maintenance and protection of the naval tradition and heritage.

The enhancement of the love for the sea, as a source of national pride to next generations.

About two thousand items are exhibited in the museum today in such a manner that our naval tradition comes to life in a chronological order before the eyes of the visitors.

 

Exhibits & Programs:

Museum Exhibits:
The Naval Gallery contains portraits of naval personalities and the founders of the museum, and paintings that depict naval life. This room is also used for conferences, lectures, films, seminars and temporary exhibitions.

Exhibits dating from 8000 BC to Alexander the Great.

Original sections of the famous Wall of Themistocles, columns of a Neosoikoi, a 19th century lighthouse, as well as copy of the statue of Poseidon (or Zeus).

Exhibits of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine era until the end of the 18th century.

One of the most glorious pages of the Greek Naval History, the War of Independence of 1821, is presented in this room.

Exhibits that are related to naval history and tradition from the establishment of the Greek state in 1830 until the Balkan Wars.

This room is dedicated to World War II.

The last two rooms are dedicated to the creation, history and evolution of the Merchant Navy.

The Library & Programs:
The Hellenic Maritime Museum has the greatest naval library in Greece, with more than 10,000 volumes of books and periodicals. Its main themes are Naval History and development of the Merchant and War Navy through the centuries, naval science and art, as well as naval literature. There are also photographic archives with thousands of photographs classified by theme.

The Maritime Museum of Greece also houses a big collection of Greek and international maps from the 16th to the 19th century.

To ensure that the knowledge and importance of Greek Maritime History is passed thorugh the generations, the museum provides training programs to children from 6 to 15 years of age. For more infomation on how to contact us about these programs, visit our website.
